Joy, not joy

...Or, why are we in this business anyway ?

Just before the past weekend, when this webdeveloper was bound to leave town for some days out of town, family, cat, PowerBook, packed and ready, the client phoned. You need to add 5 links to that navigation bar, asap..., which wouldn’t be a big problem, technically, that is, except that the whole damn thing broke the layout badly, but only on that browser that better remain unnamed. A quick message posted on the appropriate mailing list, answers pooring in, some further nastyness uncovered (thanks friends from Norway, Germany, and Spain!).

A solution was eventually found and uploaded to the server’s testarea, all on a hopelessly slow dialup connection; the client notified early on a Saturday morning. By Tuesday evening, no answer had come in from the client,... it was all urgent, remember ? Then came the phone call… Mr Client’s computer had broken down (again, 3 weeks ago we heard the same song) due some nastyness or other. He will check as soon as the object is brought back to life…. Bleh!

An email was fired, with the address of the Apple store, the link to download Firefox, and some more.

Psssht… A webdevelopper opens a can of beer… and looks around the studio with loving eyes. Apple and Linux boxes. And curses a big monopolist.

Others have expressed some stronger feelings.

Bleh !! (bis repetita).
