In a beautiful piece, Tristan Nitot reacts on the events, the past few days. Ignorance is bliss…
?
The events, more than just a step backwards in the fight over software patents reveal more than ever the power of big business to lobby and manipulate decision makers. Despite official request by the European Parliament and National Parliaments in the various European countries to postpone a decision, the Commission voted without discussion to accept the current Agreement. Luckily, all is not yet lost in this particular case, as the ‘Agreement’ still has to be submitted to the European Parliament for a second lecture. Not much hope is left, but still, a window remains open. Slightly. But lots remain to be done. Because software patents are a maddening, dangerous thing. Something we haven’t seen the worst of it, up untill now. Expect the big boys to be much more aggressive in the future, probably via proxies and parasite companies in a first step.
Sad Days ahead, once again, I’m afraid.
